When Was The Last Time You Checked Your Credit?

Many feel that their credit is safe because they have not seen any evidence to make them think otherwise. No one is calling and saying they owe money that they never authorized payment for. Bank accounts and credit cards do not show any fraudulent activity. No letters have arrived in the mail to say that there is a problem, so everything is ok, right?

Not necessarily so. Do you realize that identity thieves, being as good as they are at what they do, can steal your identity long before you are ever aware of it? They can open a credit card in your name and have it mailed to their address, use the entire credit limit and move on, long before you are made aware. They can provide a phone number that is not linked to you, so you never know what happened. The credit card company begins mailing late notices, to the address that the thief provided. Then they begin calling to collect payment, only to find out that the phone number provided was invalid. At that point, all they can do is continue to send letters until the lack of response forces them to send you to a collection agency who also tries to reach you by letter and by phone. By this time, your credit is ruined and you don’t even know it!

A few years later, you decide to apply for a loan for a new car and you are denied due to your credit rating. You can’t understand why because you are good about paying your bills on time and you haven’t made any late payments or had any “blemishes” on your credit. Then, you find out that there is something on your credit report that you never knew about, you never authorized and yet you will spend hours trying to fix. Until you do, you can not get any new credit. Is that fair? NO! Yet that is the game that identity thieves play on people every day.

So, when is the last time you checked your credit?

That is a good idea. I know someone who found something on their credit report that they had no idea was there. They are still trying to clear that item from their file.

This is true. People are not educated on identity theft like they should be.

So how do you fix it if there is a problem on your credit that you didn’t have anything to do with?
