Over 11 Million Affected
We have reported many different instances of identity theft and exposure of personal information. Everything from stealing a laptop to downloading wireless transactions at retailers. Copying credit cards on personal machines to hacking into office computers.
And yet, here is one we did not see coming. A couple of multimedia discs were found lying around in the street! The discs contained the personal data of over 11 million customers of a refinery company, GS Caltex. This is considered the largest leak of its kind in Korea, where the discs were found. Apparently, they were just thrown away and they were retrieved near a local subway station. The incident is being investigated by they Cyber Terror Response Center and no retrieval of the data for improper use has been detected at this time. The current theory is that one of the companies employees stole the information for personal use. There are currently no signs of hacking and the company has an anti-hacking system that is still in tact.
Although not a US story, it has been repeated many times over by company employees in the US. Beware and watch your credit!
