Ohio Police and Fire Personnel Breach

I have a while to go before I can even think about retiring, but it must be an exciting day when the last day you will ever have to work for someone else rolls around. I would imagine that for those who really enjoy their career, they take one last, long hard look at their office and have a few “last” conversations with their coworkers before leaving. Of course, cleaning out desk drawers and collecting family pictures that decorate the office are part of that last day. How about, oh, emailing a huge file containing the personal data of current and former employees, just in case?

That is just what happened in one of Ohio’s state offices. An employee, who was retiring from the office of the Ohio police and fire pension fund, emailed a data file of about 13,000 names, addresses and social security numbers to himself at home on the day of retirement. Those who were on the list were sent a letter within days of discovery of this breach. It is believed that the retired employee did not intend to send the email or do anything improper with the data. At the time of this story, he was not being charged. Who knows, maybe he just wanted to go out with a bang?

On a serious note, those who were on that list and were notified will want to take a proactive approach to protecting their credit. Many times that letter might address how to protect your credit yourself, but if you are the type that never gets around to getting things done, you will at least want to get around to contacting Lifelock. Lifelock will do much more than just put fraud alerts on your credit file. You don’t even have to go make a phone call. Sign up from this website and take advantage of the discount code.
