Mother and Son Team…Caught
It’s nice to hear of close-knit families who like to spend quality time together doing things that are “for the greater good”, so to speak. What we don’t like to see in the news, is when close-knit families will do anything together, such as the following story released this week in California, about a mother and her son:
Over 700 people have been exposed to the possibility of identity theft at the hands of two people. Angelina Leon and her son, Jaime, have been stealing mail from post office boxes, mailboxes and cars to get names and credit card numbers.
Leon was arrested on suspicion of identity theft and possession of stolen property that was found to have been purchased under false identity and delivered to Leon’s home. She later posted bail, and with her son, rented various hotel rooms under false identities. Police were able to search the hotel rooms and found stolen mail being kept in the rooms. Both Leon and her son were later apprehended and arrested for charges related to identity theft and other crimes committed while Leon was out on bail.
Victims will be notified by mail that they are at risk and need to protect their credit. With the number of breaches of personal information that have been released in the news this year, we all need to be aware of the dangers of not watching our credit closely and protecting our social security number and credit cards. I saw this story in the news and thought that this woman must be crazy thinking she could keep doing this even after she got caught!
