More Ways Thieves Benefit
Our last article showed some of the ways that identity thieves use valuable personal information to start a “tab” for the victim. Here are more ways that personal information can be used (continued from our previous post):
7) A driver’s license or state identification card could be issued in your name, with your information but using their picture;
your name and social security number can be used by the thief to get government benefits;
9) identity thieves can file a bogus tax return using your information
10) your social security number can be used by the thief to get a job;
11) medical services can be issued in your name
12) property can be rented in your name
13) your name could be given to authorities during an arrest. Failure to show up for the court appearance can result in a warrant being issued in your name.
All of these results of identity theft can be scary. We all must be very cautious with our personal information and be aware of any breaches that might have involved our personal information. If you receive a letter by mail indicating that your personal information has been breached and that you are at risk of identity theft, you must act to protect your good name.
