Identity Theft Resource Center Reports 2008 Breaches
The type and frequency of data breaches that take place is helpful in finding trends and information that can help to assist in protecting data. The Identity Theft Resource Center has been tracking this information for the past three years. A recent report by the Identity Theft Resource Center has revealed that between January 1, 2008 and September 30, 2008, 516 breaches have been reported. The number of individuals records exposed as a result of these breaches is reported to be 30,382,786.
These breaches include the exposure of records of all types of industries. These include: medical; government; military; educational; business; and banking/financial.
Some of the larger of these breaches have been 23,000 at Ivy Tech Community College; 13,000 at the Louisiana Real Estate Commission; 13,000 at the Ohio Police and Fire Pension Fund; 34,000 Princeton Review; 92,095 Dominion Enterprises/IFMG; 2,000,000 Countrywide; 202,000 Blue Cross/Blue Shield of GA; 128,000 St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center; 23,000 University of Maryland; 55,000 Florida Organ and Tissue Registry; 51,000 Montgomery Ward; 70,710 Colt Express Outsourcing Services (approx. 20 client companies); 10,000 Nationwide Insurance – Farm Bureau (OH); 72,000 Stanford University; 2,200,000 University of Utah Hospitals/Clinics; 11,300 University of Florida; 113,000 AT&T; 15,000 IRS; 70,000 Oklahoma State University and many, many more.
