Have You Seen or Read Her Story?
There was a movie made for television a few years ago called: “Identity Theft: The Michelle Brown Story”. The story of this then 29 year old woman made enough of an impact to make her story known to the public. Michelle was able to testify before a U.S. Senate Committee back in the year 2000. Her testimony provides much insight into what happened to her.
In summary: she began with a clean credit record like any other person. One day in 1999, she received a phone call that changed her life. She was asked about the first payment due on a truck that she purchased the month before. She knew nothing about this truck. Once she realized she was a victim, she placed fraud alerts, canceled credit cards, etc. to be sure that nothing else happened. The person who had stolen her identity had racked up over $50,000 in charges that were owed by Michelle. Not only was Michelle’s credit ruined, but the criminal impersonated Michelle while committing other crimes, leaving Michelle an arrest record as well. Michelle was made aware of her “record” when she was stopped by Customs while traveling. The thief was in prison, but Michelle was still paying for the crimes!
Michelle was furious knowing that someone else was “living the good life at my expense” and she told her story to help other victims. Unfortunately, this type of story is being told over and over again by people all over the country. Take every action that you can to do what is necessary to protect your good name.
