Close Encounters of the “Identity Theft” Kind

Do you feel like you know the “FreeCreditReport.com” guy? He has sung to you in several catchy commercials on TV since the end of 2007. He has a band that could use just a “little” practice. He is spreading fast on YouTube.

What you may not yet know, is that this website is owned by Experian, one of three major credit reporting bureaus. And the “free” credit report automatically comes with a credit monitoring service that only costs $14.95 per month. That’s right! $14.95 per month, every month, until you realize that you should not have paid anything for a free report! How can they charge this? You must enter a credit card to get your free report. Is it easy to just start your 7-day free trial with your credit card and then cancel? That remains to be seen.

What about the “FreeCreditReport.com” guy? Well, he doesn’t really have a band, his marriage was not ruined by his dream girl, he didn’t start his “nonexistent” band in his wife’s parents’ basement, his job at a seafood restaurant is not a result of identity theft, and the voice you hear is not his because he is not American! Isn’t he the epitome of someone who should represent a company who wants to prevent identity theft!
