City Of Indianapolis Incident

The Indianapolis Star recently reported that due to an error, the personal information of over 3,000 people who had been charged with minor offenses related to drugs and alcohol was posted to a new web site belonging to the city of Indianapolis. The information was displayed for just under two weeks, in the late part of September and early part of October.

A spreadsheet that had the names, birth dates and social security numbers of offenders in 2006-2007 was discovered on the website and was taken off on October 9th. The entire website was replaced with the older version to be sure that all precautions were taken.

“ISA (Information Services Agency) took aggressive action to correct the problem, to notify the affected individuals and to prevent this type of disclosure from happening again,” Kevin Ortell, interim chief information officer, said in a news release.

Letters are being mailed to those affected by the incident and they will also receive information about protecting themselves from identity theft. There is no mention of free credit monitoring for these victims.
