Reaction to University of Florida Data Breach
Many students are outraged with the recently reported intrusion into a computer server at the University of Florida College of Dentistry. Over 344,000 records are at risk due to the unauthorized access to their birth date, social security number, name and address. Although the breach was discovered back on October 3rd, the incident is just recently being reported.

University of Indianapolis Recently Hacked
The Chicago Tribune has recently reported that the University of Indianapolis has been attacked by a computer hacker. Someone was able to break into their computer system and gained access to the sensitive data of 11,000 people on file, including social security numbers. This includes faculty, students and staff.

Ministry Of Defence Report
Here is another case of portable hard drives or portable discs being stolen that contained personal information. The Telegraph has reported that the Ministry of Defence has recently admitted to a theft of some portable discs that contained the personal information of possibly thousands of personnel who are currently serving and who are now no longer in service.

Bank Of New York Mellon
The Bank Of New York Mellon was breached earlier this year (February 2008) involving, what they thought was, about 8 million people. An investigation back in May 2008 revealed that about 4.2 million people were affected when tapes were lost with identity data on them. This incident has since been re-examined, where it has been found that over 12 million people are involved. Those customers who have been recently discovered are now being sent letters to notify them of this data breach.

Tennessee State University Students
There has been a recent report that directly affects many students of Tennessee State University. Tennessean.com has recently reported that the private financial information of over 9,000 Tennessee State University students has been “missing” since early September. A financial aid counselor at the university, downloaded the information onto a portable computer storage device and this device has been reported as missing.

Princeton Review Posts Scores In Error
August was a huge month for large data breaches. Take, for instance, The Princeton Review. They are a test-prep firm that unknowingly posted tens of thousands of test scores on their web site for about seven weeks. The breach was discovered by another test-prep company that just happened to see that data online while doing research. The web site address that was providing the data was reported to the New York Times, which in turn, informed the Princeton Review. Access to that portion of the web site was then promptly removed. Personal information exposed included names and birth dates. This information was posted with the intention of protection by password, however, the password mechanism somehow failed when the company changed internet providers. An investigation is being run to attempt to find out how many people might have accessed those files.
