Would You Want This To Happen To You?

Have you ever read a story or watched a movie and said to yourself: “I’m glad this didn’t happen to me.” You may not realize it, but with identity theft, it could have happened to you and you not even realize it yet! Yes, the damage done to your credit will eventually come to light, but when will you realize it. Will it be when you go to apply for a loan? Will it be when you apply for a credit card? Will it be when you go to withdraw money from your bank account and it is overdrawn? Will it be when you are being pursued for non-payment on an account that you never opened? (more…)

Today Show Investigates Identity Theft

According to the Secret Service, cyber crimes are growing at an alarming rate. Children tend to download music and other filesharing programs off the web all the time. What parents don’t realize is that thieves can use these downloads to steal your identity from your computer. Your online shopping, copies of your tax returns, and more.

Todd Davis, LifeLock CEO, was consulted to discuss the harm that these filesharing programs cause. LifeLock staff were able to find copies of hundreds of tax returns online, unknowingly to the tax payers. These returns contain names, social security numbers and refund information. Thieves stole the tax return of a family interviewed. There is also a short segment where secret service agents have found credit card information online.

Over 700 people have been exposed to the possibility of identity theft at the hands of two people. Angelina Leon and her son, Jaime, have been stealing mail from post office boxes, mailboxes and cars to get names and credit card numbers.

Who Would Have Thought?

Yes, times are hard and everyone is feeling the pinch of our economic problems, even small children. Apparently, a 3-year old girl in North Carolina was being reported to the credit bureaus for not paying her utility bill. In October of this year, the child’s grandmother discovered that the un-paid bill was on her credit report. The authorities were able to track the account to a 44-year old man as the culprit. The man was arrested for identity theft and other charges. Who would have thought that a middle aged man could use a young girl’s identity to get utility services?
