Be Careful of Twitter ID Theft Scam

Users of the social networking site, Twitter, should be aware of a scam that is going around to steal user login information and passwords. CRN.com reports that phishers are targeting Twitter members to get them to enter their personal information into a fake Twitter log-in page.

This attack is not the first on a social networking site. Both Facebook and MySpace have been targeted with this type of scheme in the past. Those who choose to become members of social networking sites should be aware that these sites will not ask you for your personal information after you have already logged in. Rather, once you have logged in to their homepage, you will not be prompted to give them that information again. This is where unsuspecting users become victims. They receive a message (as is what is happening on Twitter) that appears to be from an acquaintance, but actually links to a web site that is an imitation of Twitter’s login site. It is NOT the Twitter log-in page, so users must beware that they only log in on Twitter’s page. Twitter has posted an advisory on their website. It is reported that this attack has rapidly spread over the past few days (news of it was reported around January 3rd).

I saw this story online too. I haven’t started using Twitter yet, but seems that no matter what social media you use you are opening yourself to more computer risks
