Protection For Your Children
The easiest and most ideal target for identity thieves are children. Children have fresh and unblemished credit records that most likely will not be checked for quite some time. Up to 500,000 cases of identity theft per year, involve children. This makes up about 5% of all cases of identity theft that are reported to the FTC. Where do identity thieves find this information? Pediatricians’ offices, schools, even internet profiles that are composed of identifying information. Even though the children are young, most companies do not check the age of the owner of the social security number given and therefore, the owner’s age is not revealed until fraud is reported. Even though it seems this type of identity theft should be easily rectified, the opposite holds true. Child identity theft is very hard to deal with and many institutions are not prepared to handle such claims. Unfortunately, the children suffer in early adulthood when they go to apply for college loans or to start building their own credit, only to find out that they already have a bad credit rating. Some might even receive collection notices or worse.

Protecting Personal Information
It is important for all of us to do what we can to keep our personal information private. However, how much control do you have over protecting personal information? Not as much as you may think. We have mentioned several times on this website that even though you may do all you can to shred personal documents you no longer need, shred or destroy credit card receipts, avoid shopping online, only give your social security number out when necessary, opt out of pre-approved credit card offers and more, you are still not thoroughly protecting personal information. Why? Those who already have your social security number on file put you at high risk, especially if they store it on a computer for easy access. Employees can steal and use it and computer hackers can as shown in the following incident.

Conficker Worm
There has been high concern over the “conficker worm” affecting computers and going into overdrive on April 1st. One of many media websites suggest that if you want to know whether your computer has been infected, try to load any Microsoft website in your browser. Apparently, the worm will not allow internet browsers to load any Microsoft owned websites, which ironically offer the software to rid your computer of this worm for free. If you have been infected and can not pull up the Microsoft website, try asking a friend to download the removal tool for you and have them email it to your account so you can load it that way.
